FOLONA
For the Love of Nature

Empowering refugee communities through permaculture, education, and sustainable living.

Restoring land. Rebuilding lives. Growing resilient communities.

Who We Are

FOLONA (For the Love of Nature) is a refugee-led, community-based organization founded in Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Uganda. We work to empower refugee communities through permaculture education, women empowerment, and sustainable solutions to climate change, food insecurity, and social challenges.

Our work combines environmental restoration with human dignity, peace-building, and community resilience.

What We Do

We focus on six key areas to empower people and protect the planet:

Permaculture Training

Teaching sustainable land management and food production.

Women Empowerment

Supporting women through leadership, health, and financial literacy.

Community Farming

Demonstrating practical permaculture at our Nakivale community farm.

Climate Change Action

Promoting climate resilience through education and innovation.

Technology & Innovation

Using tech tools to improve refugee livelihoods.

Reproductive Health

Training women to make reusable sanitary pads and promote hygiene.

Permaculture Design Courses

Practical solutions for sustainable agriculture and land restoration

Our Permaculture Design Courses focus on equipping communities with practical skills to restore land, grow food sustainably, and build resilience in challenging environments. In Nakivale Refugee Settlement, where soil degradation and limited resources affect daily life, we train participants to use low-cost, nature-based methods to improve soil fertility, conserve water, and increase food production. Through hands-on learning, participants explore how to turn small plots of land into productive systems that support both people and the environment. The goal is not only to grow food, but to restore balance between human activity and nature, creating systems that can sustain communities over time.

Learning That Restores Land and Strengthens Communities

Our Permaculture Design Courses go beyond theory by focusing on real, practical solutions that address the environmental and food challenges faced by refugee communities. Participants learn how to regenerate soil using organic methods, design efficient farming systems, manage water wisely, and grow diverse crops in limited spaces.

The training emphasizes sustainable agriculture as a long-term solution to food insecurity. By improving soil structure, increasing biodiversity, and reducing dependence on external inputs, participants are able to produce more with less while protecting the land for future use.

Land restoration is at the heart of this work. Many of the areas we operate in have been overused or degraded, but through simple techniques such as composting, mulching, intercropping, and tree planting, participants learn how to bring life back to the soil. These practices not only improve harvests but also contribute to climate resilience and environmental stability.

As participants apply these skills in their homes and communities, the impact continues to grow. Small gardens become sources of food and income, knowledge spreads from one household to another, and communities begin to rebuild their relationship with the land in a more sustainable way.

Voices from the fields

Head teacher, School partner

Hosting Folona Hub for the permaculture training at our school brought a new way of thinking to both our students and teachers. The practical approach made it easy to understand, and we are already seeing changes in our school garden.

PDC Trainee

Before this training, I did not know I could grow food in a small space. Now I have started my own kitchen garden at home, and it is helping my family. I also share what I learned with my neighbors

PDC Trainee

The training opened my mind. It is not only about farming, but about how we can live better using what we already have. I feel more confident and motivated to do something for my community.

Our Approach

How we create lasting change in refugee communities

At FOLONA, communities are not passive beneficiaries but active partners in change. We work hand in hand with refugees, women, youth, and local leaders to co-create solutions that respond to real needs, build ownership, and strengthen long-term resilience.

We recognize that environmental, social, and economic challenges are deeply interconnected. Our approach integrates permaculture, peace-building, and well-being to regenerate the land while restoring dignity, hope, and balance within individuals and communities.

We believe that sustainable change begins with knowledge. Through hands-on training, storytelling, and practical learning, we equip people with skills and mindsets that enable them to become self-reliant, adaptive, and committed to caring for both the earth and one another.

Rosette Kavira Permaculture Trainee, Nakivale Refugee Settlement

Before joining FOLONA, I had little knowledge about sustainable farming. The permaculture training changed how I see the land. Now I grow food consistently and support my neighbors with what I’ve learned

Chiruchiru Amisi Member, Alpha Women Initiative

FOLONA created a safe space for women to learn, share, and grow. Through the women empowerment programs, I gained confidence, leadership skills, and knowledge about reproductive health that has improved my life

Robert Ndasunikwa Parent & Community Member, Nakivale

My children participated in FOLONA’s learning activities, and I’ve seen positive change in their mindset. They now understand peace, cooperation, and caring for nature through storytelling and play
